Acne often results in scars that can cause significant distress.* We offer a number of treatments to help address acne scarring.* Depending on the nature and severity of scars, these can include saline injections, punch excision, fraxel CO2 resurfacing, and Juvederm® and Perlane® injections.* Often different types of scars coexist, and a combination of treatments is often recommended. *
Our dermatologist will help select the most appropriate combination of treatments for your scars.* Treatments include:
- Saline Injections: Saline injections are a safe, nearly painless and highly effective way to treat scarring of the skin.* Saline injections are effective on shallow atrophic and “rolling type” scars.* Saline injections can also be used prior to other procedures to reduce the amount of surgical trauma caused by a more aggressive procedure such as dermabrasion or laser resurfacing.* In most cases, all treatment results are permanent, though some individuals may require maintenance injections. *
- Punch Excision: Punch excision is ideal for small scars.* After a local anesthetic injection, the scar is excised and suture together, leaving a thin flat scar, rather than the preceding deep depressed scar.* The new scar line can then be resurfaced with a laser, to further soften the appearance. *
- Fraxel CO2 Resurfacing: Fractional (or “Fraxel”) CO2 Laser resurfacing is a newer & safer form of traditional CO2 laser skin resurfacing that penetrates deeper into the layers of the skin to stimulate collagen production.* The treatment helps restore the look and feel of wrinkled and sun damaged skin, and can also be effective for diminishing the appearance of acne scarring and skin discoloration.*
- Juvederm® and Perlane® Injections: For certain depressed scars, injectable fillers (i.e. Juvederm® and Perlane®) can be used to give immediate improvement.* The procedure is quick, with essentially no downtime.* However, the fillers are temporary, and need to be repeated after several months.* They can be combined with other treatments to give more sustained benefits. *
